Comparing the 2022 GMC Canyon vs. 2022 Toyota Tacoma

Need a new pick-up with off-road capabilities? Both the 2022 Canyon and the 2022 Tacoma are worth a gander, but which one can haul your list of must-haves. We’re not surprised that The Canyon and the Tacoma both made your shortlist. The Toyota Tacoma has a reputation for being a tough mid-sized pick-up and a capable off-roader. The GMC Canyon pushes the limits of mid-size pickups and offers some of the capabilities you’d expect to see in a full-size truck. So, which one has what it takes to tackle your workload and get you around town in style?

Interior Comfort

Even though pickup trucks are selected for their performance capabilities, modern drivers aren’t impressed with completely utilitarian riding experiences. Neither model falls into the stripped-bare category, but the Canyon has a bit more to offer on the comfort front.

For starters, the Tacoma, while built to seat five, has a cramped rear seat with insufficient legroom for adult passengers. It's also lacking in interior storage space. The Canyon on the other hand gives passengers an additional three inches of legroom and features several interior storage spots that include a huge bin underneath the rear seat on the crew cab.

The Canyon also has available heated front seats as well as a heated steering wheel.

Technology

The Toyota Tacoma has finally added Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto to the 7.0-inch infotainment system featured in every trim. But those are technology features the Canyon has had since 2017 and the Tacoma still does not offer a mobile hotspot option. The Canyon also offers a Bose® premium audio system.

Performance and Towing Capacity

The Tacoma offers three engine options with the more powerful model being a 3.5-liter V6 that generates 360-horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. The Canyon’s most powerful engine is also a V6 and generates 308-horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. Although the Tacoma has more horse-power the driving experience doesn’t deliver quick acceleration and the Canyon can out-tow the Tacoma by nearly a thousand pounds.
