A GLIMPSE AT THE GMC SIERRA'S PAST
The GMC Yukon was originally known as the GMC Jimmy. In 1993, GMC officially re-titled the vehicle as the Yukon, and two years later begin offering the vehicle with four doors. This was in response to the beginning of the sales explosion in the sport utility market from families who desired larger SUV vehicles with easier access.
GMC introduced the 1998 model year Yukon highlighted by the new 5.7L "Vortec" V8 engine that delivered 255 horsepower and 330 lb-ft torque. The Vortec engine was an important part of the history of the Yukon as it marked General Motors first foray into improving truck/SUV engine efficiency (without sacrificing performance). The Yukon received a complete re-engineering and re-design in 2000. Engine options and performance increased across the board, and the factory began to include premium interior features as standard on the Yukon that the competition charged additional for.
Over the next decade and a half, the factory has continued to refine the GMC Yukon with every model year. The Yukon has become one of the premium full-size sport utility vehicles in the North American market, and it shows no signs of a sales slow-down in the future.
